Jon ran his first half marathon today!

We were supposed to be at my mom’s house this weekend, but postponed the trip – so we registered for the Santa Hustle on Friday afternoon. We’d previously thought about doing it, but planned the trip out of town instead – so this was sort of a last minute thing.

I am SO proud of him. He’d sort of been slacking lately (like me) since we decided on the Covenant race (in March) for our first half. He just felt like going for it, though. I’m glad.

I ran the 5k. My watch showed that it was a little short, which was disappointing since I was hoping to compare to my first race earlier this year. I thought about running past the finish to make it past 3 miles (on my watch), but it was super crowded and I wasn’t sure where I’d go since we ended in a fairly small parking lot full of tents for an after-party … so I stopped.

I don’t know if my watch was off or if the course was off or what (Jon’s race was a little long). I guess it doesn’t really matter that much.

I know I’ve said this before, but I really believe that a large part of the difference in my running motivation this time around has to do with the social aspect of my running group.

Most of us had races this weekend – Kiawah, Rocket City, etc. – and I feel like it’s been such a fun weekend seeing posts and pictures and hearing how everyone has done. Several ran the Santa Hustle this morning, so we met up.

I love it. I’m definitely one of the slowest – and one of the only people to run mostly 5ks (for now), but everyone is super supportive. I have never felt like I don’t fit in or don’t belong, etc.

We hosted a party at our house Thursday night (for the holidays and because we’re losing our coach) and about 25 people showed up. It was awesome. This whole thing came about exactly one year ago when I was agitating about needing something new to do for the new year. I would have never guessed it would turn out so well in just one short year.

Prior to 2013, I’d done one 5k in Ann Arbor. Walked. This year? I’ve done 7 5ks, a 10k and a 15k. Jon has done 6 5ks, a 10k, a 15k and a half.

Crazy!

Like I said, I feel like today’s race was probably short (according to my watch). Regardless, I couldn’t run 400m without walking in January when this whole shebang started. Definite improvement!

My first 5k (initial RunKNOX time trial), goal 5K and final 5k of 2013:

I’ve been in a slump lately and haven’t been super motivated to run the past couple of months as I’ve started hibernating (since about Halloween), but my motivation is increasing as we inch toward the new year.

Big fan of new years and new resolutions. They’ve worked out really well for us.

We’re on the couch for the rest of the day since Jon can barely walk.
