We’re in Germany!

I’m on vacation – Jon’s working (until Tuesday, anyway).

Left on the 22nd, arrived early morning of the 23rd after being wide awake for the entire 8.5 hour flight when I should’ve been sleeping. I’m starting to feel normal/less sleep deprived now – on the 25th.

Jon’s company organized their event in a small town called Landau.

We’ve walked around quite a bit, but the town has largely been closed all weekend. Everything. Even grocery stores.

Last night, Jon’s company organized a walking tour of Landau.

It rained – but we had fun, anyway.

The guide on our tour spoke very softly, so I couldn’t hear most of what was said. I know this is Martin Luther – but I’m not sure why he’s been placed here.

The guy taking the picture told me to hold his – dirty – arm.

It’s amazing what I’ll do to avoid being rude.

The food has been fantastic.

The first day (Saturday) – before his work stuff officially began – we took a short nap after our drive from the Frankfurt airport before heading out to find lunch.

That night, Jon’s company organized an Italian buffet dinner at our hotel. I had no idea what to expect – but was pleasantly surprised.

I’m not sure what came over me yesterday (Sunday) re: breakfast – but I had slept horribly Saturday night because A) I was still feeling hungover from jet lag, I guess and B) football (soccer) is going on and I woke up many times to singing and hollering from the street – so I was tired and craving carbs. Sugar.

(Interestingly – I woke up not once, but TWICE during the night to hear many German men singing John Denver’s Take Me Home, Country Roads. No idea.)

Unsurprisingly, I felt like shit after eating this and wound up falling back asleep after Jon left for his work stuff – and slept until noon.

There was an organized “wives” thing – but I skipped it. 98% because I was tired and wanted to sleep, but 2% because I was bugged by the inherent notion (and blatant comments) that we’d (the group) be out doing our typical things – shopping & drinking all day while the men slaved away. There are no male partners here – and I get that Jon’s profession is largely male dominated – but still. It bugged me. Maybe unfairly? I’ll evaluate again once my sleep has completely regulated and I’m feeling rational.

Anyway.

I slept so much yesterday that I just skipped lunch.

Dinner happened after the walking tour. It was another buffet.

Both nights, we’ve sat with a couple from Turkey. There is a significant language barrier, but the wife and I determined we have similar professions (she’s a psychologist) and work with nearly the same population. The one universal phrase we didn’t have to spend time figuring out – that I understood immediately – that we could both relate to/bond over despite our differences: “burned out.” Kinda sad.

(I’m now convinced that our next vacation will have to be to Turkey, which means I must be feeling better since I declared I would never spend more than 8 hours on a flight ever again just 2 days ago.)

Breakfast this morning:

I skipped the wives stuff again and am instead hanging out alone. This is such a luxury these days – time alone + nothing to do but whatever I want to do. I’m enjoying it. A lot.

Tonight, they’ve organized dinner + a tour at a winery. Tomorrow, Jon will be done at noon, we’ll attend a company event after that – then we’re free!

We’re planning a short trip into France before heading to Belgium for a couple of days – then Amsterdam.

Can’t wait.
