I have definitely found that I have two goals for my free time these days: to be outside & to be active in some way.

I can barely remember what we did on Saturday morning, but I know we spent a couple of afternoon hours with some of the people from the KnoxWalks program at Ijams Nature Center (80 acres of woods, trails, meadows, ponds and gardens).

It was hot – but just about the entire walk was shaded.

We had plans to meet friends downtown for dinner afterward, so I should have planned better. Had to go home to change first because I didn’t think about how hot my heavy(ish) clothes would be – and the ensuing sweat.

Untitled

We had fun, though.

Sunday, we took Jon’s child #4 to a couple more colleges to check them out (she will be a HS senior this fall). We had an appointment with a coach at the first school – so we left very early in the morning to allot time to walk around and check things out first.

Untitled

After that, we headed to Chattanooga.

Untitled

It was blazing hot (sign says 102), but we wound up walking all over creation after lunch anyway.

Untitled

(My biased choice – despite not knowing much about the academic or athletic programs – just because I really enjoy Chattanooga and miss living there and would love to have a reason to visit more often.)

Untitled

I turned my app on at some point when I realized we’d been walking long enough to matter/count toward my (as yet undecided) walking goal.

Untitled

That 35 minute mile? It included a water + chocolate break.

Untitled

I think we probably walked 5-6 miles total. It could have been totally miserable because of the heat – and because I hadn’t anticipated such a long walk and hadn’t worn/brought sunscreen – but it wasn’t.

I don’t know where she’ll wind up, but these weekends spent figuring it out have been fun.

(Well – I’m having fun. They are doing a lot of work – I just tag along.)

Today, Jon and I fended for ourselves re: breakfast.

I’m eating cereal again on a semi-regular basis for the first time in a couple of years (at least – I think?).

It will be a short-lived thing, I’m sure. It felt weird buying it – and I’m starving an hour later – but eggs are killing my stomach right now.

Untitled

Jon is still doing the paleo challenge in an attempt to lose the 15ish pounds he gained (mentally) recovering from cancer (aka way more beer and nachos and pizza and sloth than is typical).

Untitled

I mowed and weeded and otherwise dealt with the yard all morning – until he made lunch. (The asparagus is wrapped with prosciutto and was grilled. Do this.)

Untitled

He made some sort of homemade granola type thing, too. Not sure if he adapted this from a recipe somewhere, but I’ll update if so.

It started out as melted coconut oil + honey + vanilla + cinnamon.

Untitled

He added almond slices + mostly crushed macadamia nuts + pumpkin seeds + sunflower seeds + pecans.

Untitled

And coconut flakes.

Untitled

Baked it.

The whole house smelled like apple pie – which prompted a craving for vanilla ice cream because seriously … this would be SO GOOD mixed into vanilla ice cream.

I abstained in solidarity, though, since I’d already tempted him with dairy earlier in the day.

We weren’t sure if anyone would show up for the walking group and really didn’t expect anyone d/t the holiday – so we weren’t disappointed to walk alone tonight. The formal group generally stuck to 3 miles, so we’ve continued on with that. Tonight, though, we were able to do whatever we wanted.

Untitled

So – the grand total for the 3 day weekend = 12.09 miles of (other-than-expected/normal) walking. I’m good with that.

________________________________________

I almost cried when I came home from work one night last week and saw our poor little house.

Untitled

There was a lot more damage under the old siding than was expected.

Untitled

It still looks like this, btw.

They ripped off all the siding and gutters and then just disappeared for a week.

I was afraid for us to sit outside today because – given the age of the house – this is likely lead-based paint that’s flaking off and covering the porch/ground.

Untitled

All of the siding has to be done + all of the rotten wood has to be ripped out & repaired + new gutters have to be installed + a screened porch has to be re-screened + a custom door has to be built/painted/installed + new posts have to be installed on the front porch + one of our new storm doors needs to be repaired.

I think I’m going to start taking bets re: completion date despite it being contractually specified as MAY 31.
